There may be a range of issues why one would come to seek mental health services. With problems ranging from everyday stressors, relationships, family conflict, and complex trauma, there may be a sense of feeling stuck in not being able to identify whatever is affecting the person correctly. Other factors, such as identities, values, and beliefs, may show up in these stressors in ways we are unaware of.
Bringing awareness and acknowledgment to our environment and how our experiences shape us will be crucial in our therapeutic work. I approach exploring relationships between the client and their childhood experiences to try and understand how this may appear in the client’s current setting.
I sometimes view myself as a tutor and the client as the professor and student in the therapy room. I believe that the client possesses all the answers and skills to confront the issues affecting them and that I will offer unconditional positive regard and trust for them to feel ready to do it.
